I can open a publisher database or journal portal via MyLOFT but it is asking me to pay, subscribe, or sign up separately. What should I do?

Why this happens:

MyLOFT provides access to subscribed databases and journals through IP-based or federation-based or SSO-based or custom authentication. If the publisher site asks you to pay or log in separately, one of the following is the cause:

  • 1. Your institute's subscription does not cover this specific content — Your library may subscribe to a database or journal at a top level, but individual articles, chapters, conference papers, or reports within it may require a separate subscription or per-article purchase. The database being visible in MyLOFT does not mean every item inside it is covered.

  • 2. You opened the publisher site directly (via a bookmark or search engine link) instead of launching from MyLOFT.

  • 3. The MyLOFT browser extension is not installed or does not have permission to run on all sites.

  • 4. The publisher has not approved (or has revoked) your library's access IP — this requires your library to coordinate with the publisher.

  • 5. The publisher's authentication with MyLOFT (e.g., a federation, sso or token link) has expired or changed on the publisher's end.

  • 6. Your institute's network firewall is blocking MyLOFT's proxy, preventing the access token from being passed.

Checklist — try in order:

  1. 1. Relaunch from MyLOFT — Go back to the MyLOFT app or web app, find the database in eResources, and open it from there.

  2. 2. Check the browser extension — If you are on a browser (desktop), the MyLOFT extension must be installed and enabled. Click the extension icon and confirm you are signed in. Also confirm the extension has permission to run on all websites.

  3. 3. Try a different network — If you are on your institute's campus Wi-Fi, try switching to mobile data or a home network. Some campus firewalls block MyLOFT's proxy traffic. If it works on another network, report this to your library IT team.

  4. 4. Check if the specific content is covered — If access works for other articles in the same database but not this one, your library's subscription likely does not cover this particular title or content type. Contact your library to request access or ask about an interlibrary loan or article purchase request.

  5. Contact your library for the rest — If the above steps do not resolve it, your library needs to check whether the publisher has approved MyLOFT's IP for your institute or whether the publisher-side authentication needs to be renewed.
